Notting Hill Carnival
   The Notting Hill Carnival is an annual street carnival held on August Bank Holiday in Notting Hill, a London district with a large black population. Since its inception in 1966, the event has grown enormously from a local celebration of the Caribbean in London to become Britain’s largest carnival, attracting one and one-half million people. It attracts all kinds of people, but still retains a West Indian feel. Recent carnivals, especially in the 1980s, have been marred by racial attacks, and have also attracted a heavy police presence which has resulted in clashes between police and participants. Politicians vie with each other to claim a media-friendly position alongside the crowds, and in 1997 the new Conservative Party leader, William Hague, declared the carnival the most important cultural event in Britain.
